Field mowing & feeding eagles in Sequim

I was mowing this field on Cays Road, and I had a few 'friends' looking for snacks. Usually its ravens or crows that follow me, but this time it was 5 bald eagles. This one's patiently waiting for my next pass through the field.

New deck installed in Sequim

Check out these pictures of a recent job we did here in Sequim. We removed the old treated 2x4s and replaced them with new Trex decking, Saddle color, with color matched screws. We also had to re-inforce the deck to better support the Trex, so we added additional joists to make the support beams 12 inch on center.

The results? A stronger deck with less flex that will last for years!

Dry wells help alleviate drainage problems in SunLand

If you have standing water on your lot, or even under your house, due to insufficient drainage, a dry well may be a good solution for you.

I recently installed a dry well in SunLand, here in Sequim, to help with a drainage problem on an older house. It only took a couple of days, and is a fairly simple solution.

Dog runs and fences installed

Hello, and welcome back to Sequim Yard Works.

Now that the weather has calmed down and the snow is gone, it's a great time to get busy on spring projects.

If you've been thinking about installing a dog run or new fencing, here's a couple of pictures of what we've installed recently in Sequim.

Here's the fence, showing the metal posts set in concrete. This way there's no rot on the support boards, and the fence is stronger and will last longer.

It's Time to Clean Your Gutters

With fall upon us and winter just around the corner, it's a great time to make sure your gutters and downspouts are clean and working well.

But please be careful; with all the ladder climbing and working on high roofs, this can be a dangerous and daunting chore, especially for some of you older ones out there. But don't despair... just call Sequim Yard Works and Lee and I will be happy to do it for you.

We also do yard clean up, so if you need help with your fallen leaves, pinecones and branches, we're here to help. I have a large dump trailer, so we can clean it up and haul it away for you.

How's your compost pile?

Fall's a great time to start a compost pile. Along with grass clippings, you can add spent annual flowers and vegetable plants, leaves and branches, flowerless weeds and salad scraps. In the September issue of Sunset magazine, on page 38, (Northwest edition) that you should run over the larger dead flowers and veggie plants with a lawnmower, and make a pile at least 4 feet wide. Water the pile and turn it occasionally, and you should have a good compost pile in about 6 - 8 weeks.

I've also mixed in some 'Garden Glory' compost that I purchased from the transfer station in PA. Click the link above for more information, including pricing, which is competitive with other local suppliers, and helps recycle yard debris.

My brother-in-law Lee just used this compost to start his new lawn from seed, and it's working great so far. The lawn should be fully filled in before winter.
